Backyard Bard in the Middle East + 10 Year Celebration

Robert Turnbull

G'day everyone,

Hope you've enjoyed this bonus day of Summer! (I think of it like the extra hour at the end of daylight saving, but 24 times better...)

The Backyard Bard in the Middle East!

I've got exciting news to share. My family and I (i.e. Simone and our two daughters - Hannah and Bethany) are planning to move in August to the Middle East for some years. Our long term goal is to see how Biblical Storytelling can be helpful in sharing God's Word across cultures. Our immediate task will of course be to learn the local spoken language and we also hope to learn the local sign language because we plan to work with people who are deaf. We see that training in Biblical Storytelling will be an essential part of our work and we're delighted that the Anglican Archbishop of Egypt and North Africa has expressed interest in inviting us to do storytelling training in Cairo.

If you are interested in learning more about our plans and if you would like to partner with us in sharing the blessing of Biblical Storytelling around the world, then please come to our information night:

Rob and Simone's Info Night
7:30 - 9:30pm, Thursday, March 15th
Ridley Melbourne
170 The Avenue, Parkville

If you cannot come to this night, we also have a similar info night Tuesday next week:

7:30pm, Tuesday, March 6th
Holy Trinity Doncaster
106 Church Rd. Doncaster

If you cannot come to either of these nights and you are still interested, please email me and I can send you an info pack.

Of course, because I have played a significant role in the Backyard Bard team over the last few years, my departure will mark a new stage in our theatre company. I believe we are only going to be stronger. We will still have the excellent leadership of Simon Camilleri, the Creative Director of the Backyard Bard. Also, without me needing to earn a living from the role of being a storyteller, there will be more space for others to put their hand up to do more storytelling around the place. Already our current apprentices in Melbourne and Sydney are doing a marvellous job. This leads me to the next announcement...

The Backyard Bard's 10 Year Celebration

This year marks the 10th anniversary of our first Biblical Storytelling show, The Gospel of Mark at La Trobe Student Theatre. We've come a long way since then and we would like to celebrate what God has done through this medium and also look to the future about how our small theatre company can serve the people of Australia and beyond over the next 10 years. There will some food, lots of storytelling and heaps of fun.

If you might be interested in coming along, please put this date into your calendar:

Saturday, May 12th from 7:30pm.

We are still finalising the venue but it looks like it will be in Doncaster. You'll hear more about this great night in my next email update.

Easter Storytelling

Our Easter schedule is mostly full but if you email me soon, there is a chance that your church can have a storytelling from John's Gospel on Easter Sunday. Let me know ASAP.

That's it from me, I look forward to seeing many of you at our Info Night at Ridley in a couple of weeks.

Thanks,

Rob
